Noor Nisar Post Reflection 1

Hello Everyone !

My name is Noor Nisar and I will be sharing my reflections on what I learned today. I would like to take a moment to share my insights on the information of public speaking based on the knowledge I gained from every presentation. Watching all of my classmates present has greatly influenced my way of effective communication. Within every presentation, it helped me with my own contribution of growth and understanding this field a lot more better. In this discussion I would like to go more in depths about recognizing the changing landscape of public speaking.

Part 1: The Five Arts of Public Speaking

Public speaking is an essential skill that involves presenting information or ideas to an audience in a clear and engaging manner. It can take various forms, from formal speeches to informal presentations, and is utilized in numerous contexts, including business, education, and community events. The five arts of public speaking requires invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery

Invention gives you a chance to express your creativity and imagination. Arrangement is referring to how you organize your ideas. Style is involving imagery you use to bring a speech’s content to life. Memory refers to using all your knowledge and abilities as a communicator to give an effective speech. Delivery refers to the moment of when a speaker presents it to the audience, using voices, gestures, body movement, and technology.

Part 2: Developing and Researching your speech

In this section I would like to reflect on the very important steps involved in developing a speech. I learned that in developing a speech is understanding the audience and knowing who your target audience is so you can tailor your content to their interests to catch their intention. Knowing this will increase their engagement in wanting to listen to what you are talking about and this is crucial. When it comes to presenting it is crucial you have a topic that you will feel strongly about and energize you and produce a more dynamic and interesting speech. Knowing a lot about a topic provides much of the background information needed to create a well-researched, dynamic, and inspiring speech. But having little knowledge of a topic can also motivate you to learn more about it. Just be sure you can dedicate enough time and have access to the resources you’ll need to research the topic fully. Finally, consider how comfortable you are talking about a topic. Be willing to explore new ground. But if it’s something you really don’t like discussing with your friends and family, you probably won’t want to give a speech about it. Along with it I have learned that creating a specific purpose and thesis statement is so important in order to be clear with the direction and to keep my speech organized. My classmates explained properly during the presentation outlining the speeches.

Part 3: Presenting yourself and your ideas

In this chapter I'll explore the importance of presenting oneself and one's ideas effectively during a speech.
Language is ambiguous words that have multiple meanings and individuals have their own meaning, or also for words and the concepts those words represent. It talks about denotative and connotative meanings. denotative meanings refer to formal and connotative meanings refer to the more unique meanings. This is telling us that words, a word can have multiple meanings.

Language and Culture

Throughout the presentations i was very interested in the topic of language and culture. I learned how language can reflect our culture in many ways. Culture becomes very popular when speakers start using slang, jargon idioms, euphemisms and cliches. I really like how there’s many different ways to incorporate cultures into our language and use them throughout generations.

They would also use language effectively. Showing how powerful word choices really are that makes a speech more memorable. My classmates did a really good job in explaining how languages can be an opportunity along with a challenge.

Part 4: Speaking Situations

In this chapter, I was able to develop my speaking skills. I learned about distance speaking, media appearances, and a lot more. Distance speaking is a planned presentation of ideas transmitted from one physical location to other locations. Usually used for when the participants can’t be present at the moment. A great way to communicate especially during the pandemic. Another example would be graphical online presentations which is a visually based talk delivered to an audience.

Media Appearances

Examples of media Appearances would be a spokesman for a company, a news reporter, or even an announcer. The basis of media Appearances is large organizations having someone represent and talk for them. As a spokesperson you have to have the appropriate mannerisms the business or organization want you to have.

Casual Reasoning

In causal reasoning, the speaker argues that one action or event brought about another action or event. Persuasive speakers use causal reasoning in four ways:
  • to explain why something happened,
  • to identify who’s responsible for something,
  • to determine whether people can control an event, and
  • to predict what might occur in the future.

When a public speaker uses questions in their speeches they are 3 different ways they go about it
  • Speeches on question of fact
  • Speeches on questions of value
  • Speeches on questions of policy
Although each of these types of speeches has a general speeches has a general purpose of persuading an audience, they differ in the kind of outcome the speaker seeks.

In conclusion, this assignment really helped me gain more knowledge in speech, It went through some very unique interesting information that I had no idea about. This assignment is very helpful because it gives an open mindset to everyone in the class about speech and how to better present in the future and not be that terrified. I am confident that I will implant some of stuff into my daily life and how openly and confidently I talk to people and when giving a speech or a presentation as well. Thank you!
